Riley Park Maternity Clinic update

In May, Calgary Foothills PCN announced it is transferring the management of the Riley Park Maternity Clinic to the physicians of the clinic.

That means the doctors are going to run and oversee the clinic or clinics’ daily operations, like many family doctor practices around Alberta.

“We believe this new model of a physician managed clinic — along with team-based care support from the PCN — will be the best path forward for everyone,” says PCN executive director Jake Jennings. “Other PCNs in Calgary have made the same change and the results have been successful.”

The PCN will continue to support low-risk maternity care with nursing support and through the many other programs it offers.  The PCN and physicians are committed to continuing to provide quality care and making the transition as seamless as possible for patients.

The transition will be completed sequentially, and details are still being worked out. This Q&A will be updated regularly.

What is going to happen to the clinic?

The physicians are still working out the details of the transition. They are currently planning to offer patients more choice by providing care from three different groups.

Low Risk Maternity Care will start their transition to Care @ Market Mall in October and plan to be fully transitioned by November 1, 2024. An expansion to the Sage Hill location is expected later in 2024.

I am a patient at RPMC. What do I do?

You will continue to be cared for by your current doctors. Depending on which group of doctors you belong to your care may shift to a new location. Your care team will keep you updated on the details and location of your appointments.

If you are experiencing an emergency, please proceed directly to the hospital.

Why was this decision made?

This change gives the physicians control over the operations of the clinic and allows the PCN to support the most vulnerable low-risk maternity patients. Additionally, the PCN can focus on its primary goal of providing integrated team-based care — such as nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers and mental health counsellors — to all Albertans including maternity patients.

This transition also aligns with the principles outlined in the province’s  Modernizing Alberta’s Primary Health Care System initiative:

  • access to team-based care
  • integration between primary health care and community care
  • a foundation of a coordinated and accountable primary health care system

Will I still deliver at Foothills Medical Centre?

Yes. Doctors from all the groups will continue to deliver at the Foothills Medical Centre.

Will I still have access to the lactation and circumcision services?

These services will continue to be available to patients until the transition at Riley Park Maternity. They may move to a different location which we will update when we have more details.

Will I still have access to the mental health support I’ve been receiving?

Yes, you can access mental health support through the PCN’s centralized services. The PCN offers a variety of mental health support ranging from one-to-one counselling to group workshops. Learn more about the PCN’s mental health support.

If I want to switch doctors, what do I do?

As a patient that decision is yours. Please contact the clinic you wish to become a patient of, and they will instruct you on next steps.

What do I do if I want to recommend a friend for low-risk maternity care?

They can talk to their family doctor about a referral. They can also contact the clinic of their choice directly — or, for a limited time, contact the central referral line at (403) 284-3711, extension 1 to leave a message, where patients will be assigned to the next available group.
