FAQs

Why was the decision to change management made?

This change gives the physicians control over the operations of the clinic and allows the PCN to support the most vulnerable low-risk maternity patients. Additionally, the PCN can focus on its primary goal of providing integrated team-based care — such as nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers and mental health counsellors — to all Albertans including maternity patients.

This transition also aligns with the principles outlined in the province’s  Modernizing Alberta’s Primary Health Care System initiative:

  • access to team-based care
  • integration between primary health care and community care
  • a foundation of a coordinated and accountable primary health care system

The PCN will continue to support low-risk maternity care with nursing support and through the many other programs it offers.  The PCN and physicians are committed to continuing to provide quality care and making the transition as seamless as possible for patients.

Will I still have access to the mental health support I’ve been receiving?

Yes, you can access mental health support through the PCN’s centralized services. The PCN offers a variety of mental health support ranging from one-to-one counselling to group workshops.

What if I want to recommend a friend for low-risk maternity care?

They can talk to their family doctor about a referral. They can also contact the clinic of their choice directly.
